Home Gardening Today
On 2022-06-04 by Donald EdwardsA recent study by Brun and colleagues in Senegal found that home gardening improved food security, social status, and awareness of healthy eating habits among women. These women are the primary source of income in many countries. For example, in Tajikistan, where the civil war caused many men to leave the country for employment, home gardens are the main source of income for women. Home gardens also provide a diverse range of plant and animal foods, which can boost dietary intake and bioavailability.
Home gardens can enhance soil conservation and contribute to the efficient cycling of nutrients and water. The continuous recycling of organic soil matter in home gardens also helps reduce soil erosion and promote land conservation. Many home gardens also support honey bees, which provide additional benefits such as pollination and fruit dispersal. These bees are an integral part of the home gardening process, and can help conserve soil and water. A home garden can also provide fresh, delicious fruits and vegetables for your family, as well as a natural source of vitamin C.
As home gardens increase in number, they offer other benefits. Not only does home gardening provide healthy food, but it can also improve the health of the family and improve the community as a whole. Furthermore, it provides a valuable source of income for resource-poor families. Home gardens have been found to improve livelihoods, promote social justice, and preserve indigenous knowledge. All of these benefits are a plus! What more can a home garden do for you?
In developing countries, home gardens can produce a variety of foods and contribute to household incomes. In fact, many home gardens have been used to supplement the diet of subsistence families. A broad spectrum of research has revealed the main barriers to home gardening, and recommendations for improving home gardens have been made. Hoogerbrugge and Fresco identified land constraints as the main obstacle to home gardening, as well as poor extension services, insufficient labor, and a lack of markets.
As a beginner, it’s best to start with a small garden before going full-blown. As you grow more confident in your new skills, you can grow bigger gardens as you gain more knowledge. First, decide what you want to grow. If you’re planning on growing vegetables, consider planting those your family will eat. If you’re interested in herbs, you can grow them for cooking. And if you’re trying something new, think about planting some of your favorite herbs.
In addition to the physical benefits of home gardening, there are also mental and emotional benefits. Physical exercise is one benefit, and it contributes to a healthy weight and blood pressure. It also helps people feel better mentally. Many people find that their home gardens improve their health, while simultaneously reducing their stress levels. This is especially true for people who have a stressful job or a difficult family situation. The best way to get the most out of your home gardening experience is to choose a hobby you enjoy.
When you begin a home gardening project, you’ll feel rewarded with the fruits of your labor. It’s hard to resist the temptation to go out and buy groceries, but you’ll never be short of fresh ingredients in your own garden. Aside from reducing your food budget, home gardening creates moments of family bonding. The process of planting seeds, monitoring the growth of plants, and harvesting the produce are all excellent ways to build strong relationships with your family.
Home gardening has also been proven to be a powerful social and economic catalyst. It has a significant role in the development of societies. Women in the Achuar Indian community, for example, tend lush home gardens that demonstrate their agronomic skills and social status. In Sri Lanka, women tend to cultivate abundant food plants and provide labor during harvesting seasons. Moreover, women are better equipped to meet their domestic needs and help the economy.
To conduct this study, the questionnaire was distributed online between March 22nd and April 25th, 2021. At that time, all districts of Santiago were in lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so face-to-face distribution was not possible. In such circumstances, a specialized Instagram account was created to establish a network of home gardening related people in Santiago. Using a snowball sampling technique, the questionnaire was distributed to 360 followers of the specialized Instagram account. The recipients of the questionnaire were encouraged to share the link with their contacts.
